Zur Herkunft, Verbreitung und systematischen Nomenklatur der Forellen (Salmo trutta L.) im Mittelmeerraum.

Abstract:
About the origin, distribution, and systematic nomenclature of trouts (Salmo trutta L.) in the Mediterranean area.
According to previous studies all five distinct evolutionary lineages of brown trout (S. trutta-complex) recognized so far have been found in the Mediterranean basin. Recent results of DNA-analyses revealed that the Atlantic lineage of Salmo trutta has penetrated into the Mediterranean basin much farther east than previously thought, past northern Morocco, at least to Sicily, where native trout have been described as Salmo cettii already in 1810. There is also some morphological evidence that the population of Algerian trout (possibly extinct), type locality of the taxa Salmo macrostigma, Dum. 1858, might belong to the Atlantic lineage. In this case, the questionable taxonomic names for Mediterranean trout, S. macrostigma and S. cettii alike, must be considered as synonyms of, depending on species concept in use, Salmo trutta trutta or Salmo trutta sensu stricto.
