Applications of Ecological Niche Modeling for Species Delimitation: A Review and Empirical Evaluation Using Day Geckos (Phelsuma) from Madagascar.

Systematic Biology 56 (6): 907 - 923. DOI: https://doi.org/10.1080/10635150701775111

Abstract:

Although the systematic utility of ecological niche modeling is generally well known (e.g., concerning the recognition and discovery of areas of endemism for biogeographic analyses), there has been little discussion of applications concerning species delimitation, and to date, no empirical evaluation has been conducted. However, ecological niche modeling can provide compelling evidence for allopatry between populations, and can also detect divergent ecological niches between candidate species. Here we present results for two taxonomically problematic groups of Phelsuma day geckos from Madagascar, where we integrate ecological niche modeling with mitochondrial DNA and morphological data to evaluate species limits. Despite relatively modest levels of genetic and morphological divergence, for both species groups we find divergent ecological niches between closely related species and parapatric ecological niche models. Niche models based on the new species limits provide a better fit to the known distribution than models based upon the combined (lumped) species limits. Based on these results, we elevate three subspecies of Phelsuma madagascariensis (P. m. madagascariensis, P. m. grandis, and P. m. kochi) to species rank and describe a new species of Phelsuma from the P. dubia species group. Our phylogeny continues to support a major endemic radiation of Phelsuma in Madagascar, with dispersals to Pemba Island and the Mascarene Islands. We conclude that ecological niche modeling offers great potential for species delimitation, especially for taxonomic groups exhibiting low vagility and localized endemism and for groups with more poorly known distributions. In particular, niche modeling should be especially sensitive for detecting recent parapatric speciation driven by ecological divergence, when the environmental gradients driving speciation are represented within the ecological niche models.

Comparative ecology of the African pike, Hepsetus odoe, and tigerfish, Hydrocynus forskahlii, in the Zambezi River floodplain.

Journal of Fish Biology 45 (2): 211–225, August 1994. DOI: 10.1111/j.1095-8649.1994.tb01301.x

Abstract:

The ecology of sympatric African pike, Hepsetus odoe (Hepsetidae), and tiger fish, Hydrocynus forskahlii (Characidae), were compared during high (May-August) and falling water (September-December) conditions in the Upper Zambezi R. drainage of Zambia. Both species were common in the central and southern regions of the river and associated floodplain, and Hydrocynus was common in the northern region in swift flowing tributaries where Hepsetus was rare. Hepsetus inhabited vegetated environments of river backwaters, lagoons, and sluggish tributaries, whereas Hydrocynus occupied the open water of the main river channel almost exclusively. During the period of annual flooding, juveniles of both species coexist in flooded savanna regions. Size distributions of adult Hydrocynus and Hepsetus changed relatively little between high and low water conditions. Stomach contents analysis indicated that adult size classes of both species are almost entirely piscivorous, and both show diet shifts with changes in size. Only very small seasonal diet shifts were noted. Approximately 50% of the diet of Hepsetus consisted of haplochromine cichlid fishes, but also included large numbers of tilapine cichlids and mormyrids, Hydrocynus consumed primarily cichlid fishes, but also consumed large percentages of Hepsetus and small characid fishes. Small size classes of Hepsetus fed heavily on small machokid catfishes (Synadontis spp.) and later shifted to a diet of cichlids and mormyrids, and small Hydrocynus preyed heavily on Barbus spp. (Cyprinidae), small characids, and mormyrids. Ratios of prey length-predator length averaged approximately 0·26 for Hydrocynus and nearly 0·40 for Hepsetus. The large potential for food resource competition appears not to be realized due to a very high degree of habitat partitioning between larger size classes of the two species. At the interface between river backwaters and channel habitats, Hydrocynus is a significant predator of Hepsetus, a factor that should further restrict the occurrence of the latter in open areas of the main channel.

Abstract:

The Beaver (Castor fiber L.) in Switzerland -Biological and Ecological Problems of Re-establishment

Attempts to re-introduce the beaver into Switzerland, where it had been exterminated by the beginning of the 19th century, have not met with great success. Failures and losses have been frequent, often because of faulty assess-ments of the requ irements of th is high Iy special ised rodent. Despite twenty years of effort, the present population may be regarded as permanently established only in a few lim-ited areas. Human influence has imposed severe restric-tions on the extension of the beaver population, since the lowland waters providing the most favourable habitats I ie with in the areas most intensively exploited by man. Riparian habitats in their original, undisturbed state are now scarce and isolated. Consequently, it is difficult, if not impossible, to meet the ecological requirements of the beaver.

SCHATANEK, V. (2001)
