Abstract:

Understanding the relationship between food intake and growth in elasmobranchsfacilitates  the  establishment  of  appropriate  diets,  health  management  protocols,  andcollection plans. The Von Bertalanffy growth function (VBGF) is an appropriate method forestimating age and growth parameters. Comparisons between actual captive measurementsand mass predictions based on length-weight equations for wild sharks are useful whendetermining the condition (Wr) of aquarium-held sharks.

Age-estimation of the Christmas Tree Worm Spirobranchus giganteus (Polychaeta, Serpulidae) Living Buried in the Coral Skeleton from the Coral-growth Band of the Host Coral.

Fisheries Science 62(3), 400-403.

Summary:

The tubicolous polychaete, Spirobranchus giganteus lives buried in coral skeletons. Its age and longevity were estimated indirectly from the annual coral-growth rings of the host coral counted on soft X-rays radiographs. Since the polychaete tube grows 0.2 to 1 mm per year in orifice diameter, some had lived more than 10 years, and a few had lived more than 40 years. The application of soft X-rays for age determination of coral associated polychaete is useful for determining the correct age.

Wachstum, Probleme und Perspektiven von globalem Whale Watching.

Bachelorarbeit

Ganze Arbeit

Jährlich nehmen weltweit ca. 13 Millionen Menschen in 119 Ländern an 500 verschiedenen Orten Whale Watching Angebote in Anspruch.

Abstract:

Seeing a whale for the first time in its natural habitat as a remarkable event is one reason why whale watching, the observation of cetaceans in the wild, has now grown to a 2.1 billion dollar industry. Across the globe, the whale watching industry has grown at an average rate of 3.7 % per year, comparing well against global tourism growth of 4.2 % over the same period.
Servicing a niche on tourism market, whale watching supports over 13 000 jobs worldwide. Evoking an environmental awareness, whale watching is seen as a chance to protect cetaceans from the threat of extinction. Furthermore, whale watching shows a massive economic activity which is a mixed blessing. Vessels can influence demonstrably cetacean behavior in various ways. Since whale watching should be conducted under the aspect of sustainable activities, it is vital that neither the whales nor their habitats are disturbed in any way. Therefore, many operators follow a code of conduct and other regulation guidelines, which allow a thoughtful exposure with cetaceans. When whale watching is well managed, it can be truly sustainable and gives a sharp contrast to the days when whales were seen solely as a resource. This bachelor thesis gives an overview of the history and development, potential impacts and chances with reference to whaling and its performing nations in the context of whale watching tourism.
