Trade Data and Some Comments On the Distribution of Mauremys annamensis (Siebenrock, 1903).

Asiatic Herpetological Research 10: 110-113.

Abstract:

This trade survey of Annam Pond Turtle reveals that this species is likely to have larger distribution than previously thought. The records in the trade in Quy Nhon and Ho Chi Minh City suggest its range could extend much further south. In addition, given the one way south-north trade route, the absence of Mauremys mutica in the trade south of Hai Van Pass and the reported absence of M. annamensis in the trade north of the Pass support the hypothesis that the Pass is the natural barrier for the two species ranges. This hypothesis combined with the long existence of the Pass might indicate that the speciation between the two species happened when their ancestors dispersed across the Pass, and were subsequently isolated, by the means of rafting or walking through narrow land strip emerged during the low sea level period. In terms of conservation, M. annamensis has become much rarer even in the trade, suggesting immediate conservation measures to protect it.

Clouded leopard co-exists with six other felids in Royal Manas National Park, Bhutan.

CATnews 63 (Spring 2016): 24-27.

Summary:

Seven species of wild cats were camera trapped in Royal Manas National Park making it one of the parks with the highest diversity of wildcats in the world and hence rightly the title, ‘hotspot of felid diversity’. The camera trapped species were tiger Panthera tigris, leopard Panthera pardus, clouded leopard Neofelis nebulosa, Asiatic golden cat Captopuma temminckii, marbled cat Pardofelis marmorata, leopard cat Prionailurus bengalensis and jungle cat Felis chaus. Fishing cat Prionailurus viverrinus still remains to be confirmed. We report at least 11 individual clouded leopards in the study site and we suggest that their habitats could be threatened by human disturbances but data is insufficient to determine whether the threat is significant.

The Balearic herpetofauna: a species update and a review on the evidence.

Acta Herpetologica 6(1): 59-80, 2011

Abstract:

Here, we update the current list of amphibian and reptile fauna present in he Balearic Islands, probably the most outstanding case in the Mediterranean and of the most in the world where massive species introduction is in conflict with the survivorship,of highly restricted endemic taxa. Resulting of a long term evolution in insularity, endemic herpetofauna was already decimated during the Pleistocene but, after the human colonisation of the archipelago, the introduction of alien species, passive or deliberate, has been provoking new extinctions and range retractions in the native herpetofauna. Such process is not interrupted but has even intensified during the last years. The current species list is composed by five amphibians (one native) and 21 reptiles (2 native). A critical review of the evidence on extinctions and introductions is provided together with the conservation implications. Compared to the last review (Mayol, 1985) six new reptile species are now naturalised or are in process of naturalization, colubrid snakes constituting the most conflicting element due to their predator role.

Der Goldschakal in Österreich.

WUFF-Magazin Online  - http://www.wuff.eu/wp/der-goldschakal-in-oesterreich/

574 Seiten, durchgehend vierfarbig ilklustriert.
Schweizerische Vogelwarte/Station ornithologique suisse, Sempach. ISBN 3-952 1064-5-3.

Details:

SMITH, A. T. & XIE, Y. (Hrsg., 2008)

A Guide to the Mammals of China.

544 Seiten, 61 Farbtafeln, 556 Verbreitungskarten.
Princeton university Press. ISBN: 9780691099842.

Einleitung:

China is a magnificent country and one of the most diverse on Earth. Its size ranks fourth among the world’s nations (9,596,960 km2), and it is home to over 1.3 billion people. The topography of China ranges from the highest elevation on Earth (Mt. Everest or Chomolung ma; 8,850 m) to one of the lowest (Turpan Pendi; 154 m below sea level). Chinese environments include some of Earth’s most extensive and driest deserts (the Taklimakan and Gobi) and its highest plateau (the Tibetan Plateau or “Roof of the World”). Habitats range from tropical to boreal forest, and from extensive grasslands to desert. This wide variety of habitats has contributed greatly to the richness of China’s mammal fauna. Additionally, the geographic location of China, at the suture zone between the Palaearctic and Indo-Malayan biogeographic regions (Hoffmann 2001), further contributes to the country’s mammal diversity. Overall, more than 10 percent of the world’s species of mammal live in China (556/5,416; total count from Wilson and Reeder 2005). Twenty percent (109/556) of China’s mammals are endemic, and one of these is among the most recognizable of the world’s mammals, the Giant Panda. In their analysis of megadiversity countries, Mittermeier et al. (1997) consider China to have the third highest diversity of mammals among all countries (following Brazil and Indonesia).

Non-invasive genetic identification confirms the presence of the Endangered okapi Okapia johnstoni south-west of the Congo River.

Oryx   50 (1): 134-137.
Fauna & Flora International.  DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/S0030605314000593.
Published online: 11 November 2014.

Abstract:

The okapi Okapia johnstoni, a rainforest giraffid endemic to the Democratic Republic of Congo, was recategorized as Endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2013. Historical records and anecdotal reports suggest that a disjunct population of okapi may have occurred south-west of the Congo River but the current distribution and status of the okapi in this region are not well known. Here we describe the use of non-invasive genetic identification for this species and assess the success of species identification from dung in the wild, which varied throughout the range. This variation is probably attributable to varying okapi population densities and/or different sample collection strategies across the okapi's distribution. Okapi were confirmed to occur south-west of the Congo River, in scattered localities west of the Lomami River. We demonstrated that non-invasive genetic methods can provide information on the distribution of cryptic, uncommon species that is difficult to obtain by other methods. Further investigation is required to genetically characterize the okapi across its range and to investigate the biogeographical processes that have led to the observed distribution of okapi and other fauna in the region.

Distribution of arapaima (Arapaima gigas) (Pisces: Arapaimatidae) in Bolivia: implications in the control and management of a non-native population

BioInvasions Records (2012) Volume 1 (2): 129–138
doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.3391/bir.2012.1.2.09

Abstract :

The introduction and establishment of arapaima (Arapaima gigas) in southeastern Peru and northwestern Bolivia is an example of a fish species that appears to be increasingly common and widespread in non-native portions of its range, but whose populations are on the decline within its native range. The arapaima is overfished and considered threatened throughout its native range in the Central Amazon. We gathered and examined data on the distribution of fish and wildlife in the Takana II Indigenous Territory in Bolivia, near the arapaima’s reported initial invasion zone in Peru. Results confirmed the presence of arapaima in several water bodies where local people have also reported a strong decline in native fish populations. Further south in the Takana I Indigenous Territory, monitoring of fisheries by local communities (2002-2008), including observations on arapaima catches, indicate that until 2008 arapaima had not been reported in the area. However in 2009, there were reports of arapaima in the Undumo stream. Our results demonstrate that since the first presence of arapaima in Bolivia at the beginning of the 1980s, it has steadily expanded its distribution. We propose actions to mitigate this situation by managing and controlling populations of this invasive and endangered species, as well as improving income for indigenous communities.
