Summary

There are several publications that describe the complex acoustic communication systems of the African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) including the use of low-frequency vocalization. But very little is known about the anatomical structures of the vocal tract. Larynges of two adult and two juvenile African elephants were dissected and the cartilages, muscles, ligaments and related joints were studied by means of macroscopic anatomical methods. Histological sections were taken of the focal fold, vestibular fold and epiglottis. CTscans of the larynges were taken in the two adult individuals. The epiglottis is wide and short, its apex is rounded and directed rostrally in an angle of nearly 90°. The thyroid cartilage, cricoid cartilage and the two arytenoid cartilages are connected via synovial joints that are little flexible and whose capsules consist elastic fibres. A thyroid foramen occurs constantly within the thyroid cartilage. In one juvenile elephant two thyroid foramina were found. The thyroarytenoid muscle lies lateral of the vocal and the vestibular fold and medial of the thyroid cartilage and reaches to the Processus muscularis and the entire dorso-lateral edge of the arytenoid cartilage. It is not divided in two portions. The broad vocal fold runs from caudodorsal to rostroventral in an angle of about 35 degrees and widens slightly during its course to ventral. It has a sharp rostral edge and is separated from the vestibular fold by a shallow ventriculus laryngis. The vestibular fold has a triangle-like shape. A vocal ligament or vestibular ligament could neither be identified macroscopically nor histologically.
