MENA VÁSCONEZ, P. & HOFSTEDE, R. (2006)

Los páramos ecuatorianos.

In: MORAES R., M. et al. Botánica Económica de los Andes Centrales: 91-109. Universidad Mayor de San Andrés, La Paz.

Abstract:

Páramo is a natural ecosystem occurring above the limits of the continuous forest in the Northern Andes. It is dominated by a vegetation of grasses, rosette trees, shrubs, by wetlands and small forests. The climate is cold and the ecosystem is very sensitive to land-use changes; therefore, its productive potential is on the whole very limited. However, many people possessing a rich culture but lacking economic means, are taking direct advantage of this landscape’s resources. At the same time, a large population downstream benefits  from  them  in  an  indirect  albeit  substantial  manner,  especially  through  its  water-related environmental  service.  In  this  article  we  present  the  situation  of  this  ecosystem  in  Ecuador  and  a preliminary analysis of economically sustainable products and environmental services, with an emphasis on plants and vegetation. Their potentialities and problems are presented within the current social and political context. Páramo products usually have restricted markets, which could be drastically affected by the current globalising trends. The ecosystem’s environmental services, such as tourism, carbon storage in soils and especially storage and regulation of water flows to lowlands, could represent interesting, though  frequently  conflict-laden,  alternatives.  Because  of  its  social,  cultural  and  political  aspects,  a detailed analysis of the productivity of páramo calls for a multidisciplinary approach.

The Smithsonian Atlas of the Amazon.

256 Seiten, 150 Landkarten, 289 Fotos.
Smithsonian Books, Wafington & London. ISBN 1-58834-135-6.

Aus Buchbesprechung von A. Barnett:

AMAZONIA is a place of superlatives: the world’s largest river running through the greatest single expanse of rainforest, containing the most diverse freshwater fish communities and some of the most species-rich lowland forests. As the hydraulic system of the region, it drains about 40 per cent of South America. But the problem with superlatives is that their power wears off with repetition: people’s eyes soon glaze rather than shine.

This is the book to revive even the most jaded, to put a shine back in anyone’s eyes. Michael Goulding of the Amazon Conservation Alliance is one of the foremost experts on Amazonia’s fish, Ronaldo Barthem is a biologist with the Goeldi Museum in Belém, Brazil, and Efrem Ferreira is a fisheries ecologist with the National Institute for Amazonian Research in Manaus, Brazil, so the focus of The Smithsonian Atlas of the Amazon is the waters rather than the trees.

Goulding explores the river’s patterns of biodiversity, intriguing evolutionary and geological questions and forms of human exploitation. The large numbers are there, but appear in ways that stick in the memory rather than bludgeon it with zeros. Try this: one hour’s flow of the Amazon is enough to meet all the freshwater needs of New York for a year, and a year’s worth would drown France to a depth of 3 metres (a notion doubtless dear to some of the Smithsonian’s closest neighbours).

EISENBERG, J. F. & REDFORD, K. H. (1999)

Mammals of the Neotropics - Vol. 3 - The Central Neotropics, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil.

624 Seiten, mit 19 Farbtafeln, zahlreichen Strichzeichnungen und Verbreitungskarten

The Univeristy of Chicago Press. ISBN 0-226-19541-2.

Verlagstext:

Despite intense interest in this biologically diverse and ecologically important region, the mammals of South America are still not well known. Filling a large gap in the literature, this volume provides a survey and synthesis of current knowledge of the more than 650 species of land and marine mammals found in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil.

Third in a series that reviewers have described as "state of the art" (Journal of Biogeography) and "invaluable to anyone interested in the mammalian fauna of the Neotropics" (Quarterly Review of Biology), this volume follows the format of its acclaimed predecessors. Chapters present not only up-to-date taxonomic information but also ecological and behavioral characteristics, conservation status, and distribution maps for most species. Numerous illustrations are provided to assist in field and laboratory identification, including exquisite color and black-and-white plates by Fiona Reid. New to this volume are chapters contributed by experts on the mammalian fossil record of this region and on its current biodiversity and biogeography. An appendix summarizes changes to the nomenclature that have altered the scientific names used in the first two volumes.

The Yungas Biosphere Reserve of Argentina: a hot spot of South American wild cats.

CATnews 54: 25-29.

Zusammenfassung:

We conducted three camera-trap surveys in a productive conservation landscape within the Yungas Biosphere Reserve of NW Argentina. The surveyed area contains portions of Premontane Forest and sugar cane and citrus plantations and is intersected by riparian forest corridors. We recorded six of the seven wild cat species present  in the area. These species make different use of the different environments present in the landscape: Geoffroy’s cat Oncifelis geoffroyi was the only species recorded in the plantations, pumas Puma concolor and margays Leopardus wiedi were restricted to the forests, jaguarundis Herpailurus yaguarondi were only recorded in the corridors, while ocelots Leopardus pardalis and oncillas Leopardus tigrinus were recorded in both corridors and forests. Jaguars Panthera onca were not photographed during the surveys but are present in the study site. The Yungas Biosphere Reserve contains not only these seven species, but two other felids that inhabit the highlands of the reserve: the Pampas cat Oncifelis colocolo and the Andean cat Oreailurus jacobitus. We draw the attention to the Yungas, a small region of the Planet, shared by Argentina and Bolivia, which harbors ¼ of the World’s cat species

Pampas deer conservation with respect to habitat loss and protected area considerations in San Luis, Argentina.

Biological Conservation 115, Heft 1: 121-130.

Abstract:

Ozotoceros bezoarticus celer is the most endangered subspecies of pampas deer. Although common in the Argentine Pampas 100 years ago, it persists in only two small populations. The largest population has survived due to the rarity of roads, internal farm subdivisions, and the low cattle density. However, habitat condition for this population has changed dramatically in the last 16 years. Five Landsat images (1985, 1992, 1997, 1999, 2001), covering 4608 km2, were used to quantify pampas deer habitat loss due to the replacement of natural grassland by exotic pastures and crops. Image classification showed that natural grassland cover was reduced from 84.5 to 37.8% between 1985 and 2001. The annual transformation rate increased significantly from 1.4 to 10.9%. Average paddock size was significantly reduced from 1470 to 873 ha, and the number of paddocks increased from 129 to 227. The land within this area proposed for a national park has not escaped these habitat changes. In the last 6 years the amount of replaced area within the proposed park has increased from 9.1 to 51.1% due to actions by ranchers to avoid inclusion within park boundaries. Three patches of natural grassland still remain within the pampas deer distribution, one of which is the proposed national park. The implementation of a national park is a decisive challenge for the survival of pampas deer and its habitat in Argentina.
