BURTON, J., HEDGES, S. & MUSTARI, A. H (2005)

The taxonomic status, distribution and conservation of the lowland anoa Bubalus depressicornis and mountain anoa Bubalus quarlesi.

Mammal Review. 35 (1): 25 - 50.
DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2907.2005.00048.x

Zusammenfassung:

The anoas are two species of dwarf buffalo, the lowland anoa Bubalus depressicornis and mountain anoa Bubalus quarlesi that are endemic to the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The classification of the subgenus Anoa within Bubalus is upheld by assessment of recent genetic and morphological research. The classification of anoas into two species is still debated, but with the absence of significant opposing evidence, this position is adopted here. 2. Information about the distribution of the two species is presented that adds to but largely supports existing reports. However, it is still uncertain whether the two putative species are sympatric or parapatric in their distribution. A review of anoa distribution from historical reports and recent field data (1990s to 2002) highlights their decline throughout Sulawesi, especially in the southern and north-eastern peninsulas. The decline has been attributed to local hunting for meat and habitat loss. Most populations are rapidly becoming fragmented, suggesting that the conservation of viable populations may eventually require management of metapopulations. 3. There is an urgent requirement for conservation efforts to: (i) protect anoas from hunting; (ii) prevent habitat loss in key sites; (iii) complete genetic studies to better determine the number of anoa taxa and Management Units and assess their distribution; and (iv) determine the status of the remaining anoa populations.

American Bison - Status Survey and Conservation Guidelines 2010.

134 Seiten. IUCN, Gland, Switzerland. ISBN: 978-2-8317-1149-2

Summary:

The publication of this IUCN American Bison Status Survey and Conservation Guidelines is timely owing to a recent convergence of factors: new research findings on bison genetics and ecology, assessment and awareness of the precarious status of many bison conservation herds, new initiatives by government and non-profit institutions to improve management of existing herds and to establish conservation herds, growing interest among Native Americans in restoring bison as part of their cultural heritage, and an increasing awareness by the commercial bison industry that conservation of wild-type bison is in the longterm interest of the industry. There is also a growing body of evidence that the biodiversity of ecosystems within the original range of bison can benefit from bison restoration, from the desert grasslands of northern Mexico, through the Great Plains, to the lowland meadow systems of interior Alaska. The ten chapters of this book examine these and other aspects of the biology and conservation of the species, and offer guidelines for what we anticipate will be a new era of bison conservation in North America. Under the auspices of the IUCN American Bison Specialist Group, twenty-nine chapter coordinators and contributors share their knowledge and ideas in this comprehensive review of the diverse topics that need to be considered by researchers, managers, policy makers and others interested in restoring and conserving this magnificent animal.

Chapter 1 Introduction: The Context
Chapter 2 History of Bison in North America
Chapter 3 Taxonomy and Nomenclature
Chapter 4 Genetics
Chapter 5 Reportable or Notifiable Diseases
Chapter 6 General Biology, Ecology and De
Chapter 8 Legal Status, Policy Issues and Listings
Chapter 9 Conservation Guidelines for Population, Genetic, and Disease Management
Chapter 10 Guidelines for Ecological Restoration of Bison

Artgemäße Haltung von Yaks.

Tierärztliche Vereinigung für Tierschutz e.V. (TVT) Merkblatt Nr. 103.
15 Seiten

KLEINLOGEL, Y. (2009)

Der Wisent.

Biologie einheimischer Wildtiere 1/59. 20 Seiten.
Hrsg.: Wildtier Schweiz. Winterthurerstrasse 92, CH-8006 Zürich.

Auszug:
