REINOLD, C. (2014)

Abstract:

This study is about the acoustic communication of White Rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) and Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), which are captive in zoos in Austria. The investigation was about their different types of calls and the analysis of their temporal and spectral composition. Especially the existence of infrasound components was measured. Recorded were six individuals of White Rhinoceroses in the zoo Salzburg and two individuals of Indian Rhinoceroses in the zoo Schönbrunn in Vienna. As a result, ten different call types were distinct for the observed White Rhinoceroses. These were snort, double-snort, puff, pant, grunt, roar, snarl, groan, moo and a trumpet-sound. From these the snort was the most frequent sound type. The results show, that the lowest measured fundamental frequency was at 86 Hertz. This frequency had four call types, snort, double snort, puff and grunt. The mean duration of all call types, was less than one second, except the pant, which is a repetitive sound composed of a few elements. In many cases the sound production was connected with a loud respiration and the spectrogram showed a noisy structure, but never harmonic components.

Analysing the sounds of the Indian Rhinoceroses represented five different call types, which were grunt, double grunt, snort, puff and honk. In this rhino species the lowest measured fundamental frequency was at 284 Hertz and the mean fundamental frequency of all types was between around 350 to 380 Hertz. The duration of all call types of the Indian Rhinoceroses was on average between 0,5 and 1,2 seconds. In comparison the White Rhinoceroses use more acoustic communication. They have a wider vocal repertoire and their calls have lower frequencies, in fundamental frequency and maximal amplitude. No infrasound components were found in the calls of both species, but in other studies they were found. That’s why communication with infrasound couldn’t be locked out for rhinos.

WIRZ, A. (2009)

Habitat Use and Behavioural Ecology of Rhinoceros unicornis in the Newly Renovated Outdoor Enclosure of the Zoological Garden Basel.

Masterarbeit

Zusammenfassung:

The endangered Indian Rhinos (Rhinoceros unicornis) in captivity often suffer from feet problems due to hard soil substrates. In Zoo Basel, the rhino exhibit was renovated in order to obtain a mixed-species exhibit with the theme "Asia" and to meet modern husbandry requirements (suchz as soft natural soils, generous water basins and wallows and enrichment objects). Together with three rhinos (one male, two females) live two Asian Small-Clawed Otters and two Chinese Muntjaks.
The aim of this Master Thesis was to study the influence of the (spring-summer) seasonality and the time of day as well as the number and behaviour of the visitors on the habitat use and the behaviour of the three rhinos. The locations and behaviours of the animals were therefore recorded with the instantaneous scan sampling method during four periods (from April until August 2008) resulting in a total of 240 observation hours.
The results showed an influence of the time of day as well as the (spring-summer) seasonality on both the habitat use and behaviour of the animals. There were considerable differences among the individuals. For instance spent the bull more time with orientation behaviour, and the younger female accounted for most of the locomotion behaviour. In general, the animals spent more time bathing when temperatures were high and resting was more pronounced during mornings and midday. All animals preferred the silica sand as substrate type, followed by the wood chips substrate (for the cows).
Visitors had an influence as well; especially the cows reacted to peak visitor times and high numbers of loud visitors by spending more time at locations at a far distance to the visitors. Jaffna spent a very high percentage of time at far distances to the visitors at all times, independent of their number and behaviour.
Sociality among the rhinos was, of course, mainly performed between the cows and while resting or bathing. Inter-species interactions were rarely observed; in most cases the female otter and the rhinoceros bull were involved.
To conclude, general tendencies could be identified, such as that the animals spent more time bathing when it was warmer or that the silica sand substrate was visited preferentially. But, owing to a strong individual response to the parameters and to the low number of individuals, one should be careful with generalization of the observations.

Abstract:

In this study, food intake and apparent digestibility coefficients of eleven adult Indian rhinoceroses from four zoos were investigated. In each case, the regular zoo diet (concentrates and roughage, ration conc.) and, after an adaptation period of at least seven days, a roughage-only diet (ration rough.) were used. Faeces were collected in toto. Additionally, the mean retention time of fluids and particles in the gastrointestinal tract were measured, as well as the faecal concentration of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and lactate, faecal pH, faecal particle size distribution, water intake and the calcium:creatinine-ratio in sporadically sampled urine. Four animals were actually weighed; the body weight of the other animals was estimated. The following results were obtained: 1. Mean retention time: the average mean retention time of the fluid marker (CoEDTA) in the total gastrointestinal tract was 41.4 ± 3.7 h (n = 6) and of the particle marker (Cr-mordanted fibre, particle size < 2 mm) 60.0 ± 3.7 h (n = 6). 2. Results on food intake, apparent digestibility coefficients and intake of digestible energy are presented in Table 32.
The concentration of lactate in faeces was on average 1.9 ± 0.7 mmol/I faecal water (n=13) and did not differ between rations. The concentration of VFA in faeces was on average 39.4 mmol/l faecal water (n=6) on ration conc. and 25.4 mmol/I faecal water (n=6) on ration rough.; the ratio of acetate to proprionate was on average 5.5 and 8.2, respectively. Faecal pH did not differ between rations and was 6.4 ± 0.2 (n=8). 4. Faecal particle size distribution did not differ between rations. On average, 40.9 t 16.2% (n=14) of all particles retained on the sieves was of a size > 4 mm. 5. The average total water intake was 4.1 ± 1.0 kg/100 kg BW (n=14) and did not differ between rations. 6. The calcium:creatinine-ratio in urine increased with increasing calcium intake

 Abstract:

Foot problems are a common finding in Indian rhinos in zoological gardens. Causes and prevention were up to now not scientifically examined. This study was set up to evaluate the occurrence and causes as well as the basic anatomical knowledge of the feet structures from zoo and wild animals. For this purpose 32 (13 males and 19 females) of 35 (15 / 20) Indian rhinos, living in 11 European zoos, were examined. In addition, a detailed anatomical study was performed on 6 feet of 2 deceased Indian rhinos. Samples of 18 hooves and 19 foot pads from 10 adult zoo animals were histologically studied. These results were compared with the findings of macroscopic foot structures from 10 wild Nepalese animals.

The results show that all breeding bulls (11) as well as 50% of the adult females suffer from chronic foot problems. These problems show as cracks behind the central sole and the adjacent pad. Histologically, this area is made up of two different structures. The horn of the sole is hard and consists of long, thick, and almost straight running horn tubules. The adjacent soft pad is made up of small, thin and undulating horn tubules. Wild animals do not seem to be affected by these pathological alterations. Their pad appears hard and thick and the soles are long and concave. The apical part of the pad does not seem to carry much weight. Due to hard and abrasive flooring material in indoor and outdoor enclosures, most zoo animals have thin pads and short and flat soles. They foot mainly on the pad. Chronic strain on this highly sensible and fragile area will lead to pathological alterations.

To prevent foot problems husbandry aspects need to be changed with emphasis on the provision of soft and non-abrasive flooring material. It is likely that less pathological problems will occur if the feet have a natural shape and if the weight is mainly carried by weight-bearing border and the soles.

The aim of the study was to give a detailed description of the anatomy of Indian rhinocoros feet, to enlighten the courses and to give recommendation how to prevent the occurrence of foot problems in Indian rhinos in zoological gardens.
