MESCHKE, T. (2020)

Klippschliefer- vielfältige Einheitlichkeit oder einheitliche Vielfältigkeit.

ELIOMYS 2/2020: 4-29.

The type locality of Pan troglodytes vellerosus (Gray, 1862), and implications for the nomenclature of West African chimpanzees.

Primates. DOI 10.1007/s10329-008-0116-z

Abstract

We  show  that,  in  1862,  Richard  Burton  collected the type specimen of Pan troglodytes vellerosus not on Mount Cameroon, as has been generally assumed, but in Gabon. Therefore, P. t. vellerosus is not the correct name for  the  chimpanzee  population  of  western  Cameroon  and southern  Nigeria,  if  that  population  is  taxonomically  distinct. As First Reviser, we choose the name Pan troglodytes ellioti for   this   population   of   chimpanzees,   based   on Anthropopithecus  ellioti named  by  Matschie  [Matschie , P. (1914)   Neue   Affen   aus   Mittelafrika.  Sitzungsber.  Ges. Naturforsch.  Freunde  Berlin  1914: 323–342]  from  a  specimen in the Humboldt Museum, Berlin, collected in Bascho (=Basho), Cameroon, and given to the museum in 1905.

DONEGAN, T. (2016)

The pigeon names Columba livia, 'C. domestica' and C. oenas and their type specimens.

Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club 136(1):14-27.

Abstract:

The name Columba domestica Linnaeus, 1758, is senior to Columba livia J. F. Gmelin, 1789, but both names apply to the same biological species, Rock Dove or Feral Pigeon, which is widely known as C. livia. The type series of livia is mixed, including specimens of Stock Dove C. oenas, wild Rock Dove, various domestic pigeon breeds and two other pigeon species that are not congeners. In the absence of a plate unambiguously depicting a wild bird being cited in the original description, a neotype for livia is designated based on a Fair Isle (Scotland) specimen. The name domestica is based on specimens of the 'runt' breed, originally illustrated by Aldrovandi (1600) and copied by Willughby (1678) and a female domestic specimen studied but not illustrated by the latter. The name C. oenas Linnaeus, 1758, is also based on a mixed series, including at least one Feral Pigeon. The individual illustrated in one of Aldrovandi's (1600) oenas plates is designated as a lectotype, type locality Bologna, Italy. The names Columba gutturosa Linnaeus, 1758, and Columba cucullata Linnaeus, 1758, cannot be suppressed given their limited usage. The issue of priority between livia and domestica, and between both of them and gutturosa and cucullata, requires ICZN attention. Other names introduced by Linnaeus (1758) or Gmelin (1789) based on domestic breeds are considered invalid, subject to implicit first reviser actions or nomina oblita with respect to livia and domestica.

Flagship but only locally: bongo Tragelaphus eurycerus taxonomic history and its effects on current conservation policy.

GAZELLA 44: 65-76.

Abstract:

A review of historical literature plus the examination of zoos and museum specimens and available photos from internet source revealed the hidden diversity of the bongo antelopes, presently Tragelaphus eurycerus. While the Kenya montane form isaaci has received most conservation support in recent years, the present review highlights the species status of the little-known Upper Guinean nominal taxon. Waiting for a through taxonomic revision of the whole complex especially in the central forest block, the Central-Eastern bongos are better considered as members of a distinct species Tragelaphus albovirgatus Du Chaillu, 1861, provisionally considered to include a number of ‘subspecies’. The conservation status of T. albovirgatus and especially of T. eurycerus need further investigations even considering that, excepted for the Kenyan taxon isaaci, their survival may depends exclusively on in situ conservation activities.

DAWSON, L. & FLANNERY, T. (1985)

Taxonomic and phylogenetic status of living and fossil kangaroos and wallabies of the genus Macropus Shaw (Macropodidae: Marsupialia), with a new subgeneric name for the larger wallabies.

Australian Journal of Zoology 33(4): 413-423

Abstract:

Historical concepts of the generic status of the macropodines commonly known as kangaroos and wallabies are reviewed in this paper. A new diagnosis is provided for the genus Macropus, encompassing both living and fossil forms, and using cladistic principles to assess the phylogenetic value of diagnostic characters where possible. Cytological, biochemical and anatomical characters are used. Fourteen living and 11 extinct species of Macropus are recognized. Of these, 20 species have been classified into three subgenera, M. (Macropusj, M. (Osphranter) and a new subgenus, M. (Notamacro-pusj, as follows: M. (M.) giganteus, M. (M.) fuliginosus, M. (M.) mundjabus, M. (M.) pan, M. (M.) pear-soni and M. (M.) ferragus\ M. (O.) antilopinus, M. (O.) bernardus, M. (O.) robustus, M. (O.) rufus and M. (O.) pavana\ M. (N.) rufogriseus, M. (N.) eugenii, M. (N.) parryi, M. (N.) dorsalis, M. (N.) irma, M. (N.j agilis, M. (N.) greyi, M. (N.) parma, M. (N.j wombeyensis and M. (N.) thor. Four poorly known extinct species, M. dryas, M. rama, M. woodsi and M. narada, have not yet been allocated to a subgenus. Prionotemnus palankarinnicus Stirton, 1957 is shown to belong outside Macropus. Because it is the type-species of Prionotemnus, that name is not available for a subgenus of Macropus. A current synonymy is presented for fossil species and the known stratigraphic range is given for each species. A phylogeny is presented expressing our view that M. (Notamacropus) is the most plesiomorphic subgenus and M. (Macropus) is the most derived.
