Climate-driven range shifts of the king penguin in a fragmented ecosystem.

Nature Climate Change 8: 245–251.

Abstract:

Range shift is the primary short-term species response to rapid climate change, but it is often hampered by natural or anthropogenic habitat fragmentation. Different critical areas of a species’ niche may be exposed to heterogeneous environmental changes and modelling species response under such complex spatial and ecological scenarios presents well-known challenges. Here, we use a biophysical ecological niche model validated through population genomics and palaeodemography to reconstruct past range shifts and identify future vulnerable areas and potential refugia of the king penguin in the Southern Ocean. Integrating genomic and demographic data at the whole-species level with specific biophysical constraints, we present a refined framework for predicting the effect of climate change on species relying on spatially and ecologically distinct areas to complete their life cycle (for example, migratory animals, marine pelagic organisms and central-place foragers) and, in general, on species living in fragmented ecosystems.

King penguins in zoos: relating breeding success to husbandry practices.

Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research 4(2): 91-98

Abstract:

As  global  climate  change  warms  the  Southern  Ocean,  wild  king  penguins  (Aptenodytes patagonicus) may face drastic population declines in the future. Moreover, the captive breeding programme in Europe is currently unsustainable and it is thus imperative to determine what is required for the successful breeding of king penguins. A questionnaire was used to assess the husbandry practices and breeding success of 12 American and European zoos. Overall, a positive relationship was found between yearly egg productivity and density of king penguins held in enclosures in different zoos. All zoos examined showed male-biased adult sex ratios. Yearly egg productivity was negatively related to the deviation from an even sex ratio. Mean hatching success was greater in zoos performing outside walks with king penguins than in those that did not. Based on records over 40 years, the population of the sustainably breeding Basel Zoo in Switzerland was modelled using stage-based matrix models to gain an insight into its breeding success. Years of medium colony size (density of 0.25 to 0.38 individuals per m2) displayed a larger growth rate than years with high or low colony size, and years with equal sex ratios showed a higher growth rate than those with male-biased or female-biased sex ratios. The results suggest zoological institutions should focus on increasing density and strive toward equal sex ratios within king penguin populations to maximise breeding success. Where possible, adding outside walks should also be taken into consideration.

Abstract

Blood sampling with bugs (Triatominae) is frequently used for medical examination of zoo and wild animals, because it is regarded as a stress-free method and facilitates the obtaining of blood from small animals with veins, which are difficult to access. The analysis of progesterone in the blood of pregnant African and Asian elephants (Loxodonta africana, Elephas maximus) and common rats (Rattus rattus) via bugs should be validated. A second examination should detect, if breeding in a zoo provokes increased stress in king penguin parents and in which way this influences their parasitization.

  • The concentration of progesterone in the conventional blood samples of Loxodonta africana was 2,98±2,11 ng/ml (n=2) and in those of Elephas maximus 2,4±0,84 ng/ml (n=1). The deviation of progesterone in the blood samples which had been directly obtained via bugs from the check values amounted to ±0,71 ng/ml in Loxodonta africana and +0,6 ng/ml in Elephas maximus. The concentration of those samples from Loxodonta africana which were sucked by bugs via an artificial membrane, deviated about 0,81 ng/ml and 1,0 ng/ml from the data of the conventional samples in the elephants “Sabie” and “Sweni”. This deviation can probably be related to the membranes, which bound progesterone to its surfaces and thereby reduced the amount of blood consumed by the bugs.
  • The blood sampling via bugs in rats is recommendable, because severe surgery like cardiocentesis or the killing of the animals in order to investigate blood parameters can be prevented through this method. The blood samples from Rattus rattus sucked by the bugs comprised a volume of about 200 μl, whereas the obtaining of blood from veins of throat and tail via syringe provided merely 100 μl blood, which was insufficient for analysis. The progesterone values of pregnant rats varied between 59,3-101,3 ng/ml, when they were not heavy with young the values decreased to 4,5-32,8 ng/ml.
  • Despite relieved conditions through human custody in a zoo, breeding provokes increased stress in the king penguin parents compared to the animals of the group without offspring. The parents neglected personal hygiene and resting behaviour, whereas their defence and alertness were always increased. They took their turns in supervision and feeding and shared parental duties with two further individuals of the group, which participated in the breeding of the chick.
  • The feces of the penguin parents showed a heavily increased amount of coccidia in comparison to the individuals without offspring. The coccidia supposedly belonged to the genus Isospora and Eimeria. Several fecal samples of the penguin mother presented nematode eggs of the genus Oxyuris, in those of the father there were found Truchuris. The increased parasitization of the parental animals correlated with the increased level of stress caused by breeding, because the parasites were strongly reduced in the feces of the penguin father at the end of breeding. A bacterial infection of the mother additionally led to a heavy increase of the parasitation.
