Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was the aquisition of Rothschild’s giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) in the Zoo Leipzig. The herd, consisting of nine individuals, was therefore been observed for a period of 6 weeks (15.06.-25.07.2015) in four different recording intervals on the Kiwara-Savanna and in the giraffe’s stable. The giraffes are on this association compound on a daily basis from ca. 09:30 a.m. to 05:30 p.m. In this time frame there had been two activity maxima in the 2-hour observational time span of 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. and beside the highest amount of social behavior with 7,7 % in the first and 6,7 % in the second interval. The mean proportion of social behavior did not significantly differ between open-air enclosure (1,44 ± 0,43 %) and stable (1,2 ± 0,31 %). Nevertheless there was a significant difference in the time dependence of this behavior on the Kiwara-savanna. From 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. the percentage averaged 16,06 ± 2,35 % and from 2-4 p. m. it amounted 9,78 ± 1,1 %.
The visualization of the giraffe’s social network in a sequence diagram clarified that especially juveniles show a higher number of social interactions. They displayed more affiliation, naso-nasal and anogenital controls compared with the adults. Gusti exhibited the maximum duration of allo-grooming (88,58 ± 27,69 s).
Referring to the individual following behavior within the breeding group there could be complied a linear ranking with Max on the alpha and Geluk on the omega position.
The trial of the lactation behavior of the giraffe cows suggests a cooperative maternal care due to the fact that they didn’t suckle only their own calfs.
The analysis of the giraffe’s interspecific behavior has shown that the herd interacts most with Grevy’s zebra (Equus grevyi ) (34 %) and scimitar oryx (Oryx dammah) (30 %), followed by southern ostrich (Struthio camelus australis) (25 %), Thomson’s gazelle (Eudorcas thomsonii) (6 %) and Mrs. Gray’s waterbuck (Kobus megaceros) (5 %). The younger giraffes exhibited a higher amount of interspecific behavior regarding interaction volume and the number of interaction partners.
The topogram illustrated the individually different locating areas, depending on preferred social interaction partners. Further an inhomogeneous utilization of the enclosure areas could be documented.
This thesis was developed in cooperation with the research group “General Zoology – Chronobiology and Ethology” of the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg supervisioned by Dr. Peter Fritzsche from the discipline of sociobiology and the Zoo Leipzig GmbH.
