U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE SW REGION (2013)

Thick-billed Parrot (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha) Recovery Plan Addendum.

122 Seiten.

Recovery Strategy:

The thick-billed parrot has been absent from the U.S. for over 70 years and now only occurs in Mexico.  Thus, the focus of recovery conservation actions should occur inMexico.  Since the mid-1990s, conservation organizations and the Mexican government have been implementing conservation actions focused on research, monitoring, and protection of key breeding areas.  Furthermore, as part of a federal initiative, Mexico convened a group of parrot experts and in 2009 published a recovery plan (the PACE) addressing both the maroon-fronted and thick-billed parrots.  The focus of the PACE (CONANP 2009) is on extant populations of the thick-billed parrot; it does not address thick-billed parrot historical records or historical range in the U.S. Therefore, our approach in this Addendum to the PACE is to:

  • Summarize information on thick-billed parrot’s historical occurrence in the U.S.;
  • Synthesize or reference information (when feasible) from the PACE to formulaterecovery planning components as are required by the ESA;
  • Incorporate supplemental information received from Mexico and U.S. partners since publication of the PACE;
  • Identify broad actions necessary to address conservation of the species within its U.S. historical range;
  • Identify partnerships and opportunities to facilitate recovery of extant populations.

The Philippine Spotted Deer Conservation Project.

ORYX 25 (4): 199-205.
https://doi.org/10.1017/S0030605300034335. Published online: 06 July 2009.

Abstract:

The Philippine spotted deer Cervus alfredi, endemic to the Visayan Islands, is threatened by deforestation and hunting. Already extinct over 95 per cent of its former range, populations survive probably only in Panay and Negros. In 1987 a conservation programme was drawn up with two immediate objectives: to establish a national park in west Panay and to embark on a captive-breeding programme. The authors describe the operation of the project and its progress to date, and discuss plans for its extension.

GIBSON, R. C. & BULEY, K. R. (2004)

Maternal Care and Obligatory Oophagy in Leptodactylus fallax: A New Reproductive Mode in Frogs.

Copeia 2004(1):128-135. 2004. https://doi.org/10.1643/CE-02-091R2

Abstract:

Leptodactylus fallax is an endangered frog (Leptodactylidae) found only on Montserrat and Dominica in the eastern Caribbean. Here we report the first captive breeding of this species and document a unique reproductive strategy with an unprecedented level of maternal care. Male frogs fought and dominant animals occupied a nesting burrow. Males enticed females into the burrow with a trilling bark call (100–120 calls/min). A terrestrial foam nest was produced after 9–14 h. Female frogs remained close to their foam nests and defended them aggressively throughout larval development (42–57 days). Females fed larvae (26–43 per nest) trophic (unfertilized) eggs. Many provisioning events (10–13) were recorded, supplying a total of 10,000—25,000 eggs. Male frogs also remained close to the burrow and defended the site. Trophic eggs were the exclusive food source for the developing larvae, and L. fallax is therefore probably displaying a new form of amphibian endotrophy.

Inventory of the Eulemur macaco flavifrons population in the Sahamalaza protected area, northwest Madagascar, with notes on an unusual colour variant of E. macaco.

Primate Report Special Issue 72 (1): 39-40.

Abstract:

The blue-eyed black lemur (Eulemur macaco flavifrons; Emf), the taxonomic validity of which was recently confirmed, was rediscovered by science only in 1983 and is still one of the least-studied of all lemur taxa.
It is only found in the sub-humid forests of the Sahamalaza peninsula and in a small stretch of forest on the adjacent mainland. In the north-eastern part of its range the subspecies seems to hybridise with the nominate subspecies, E. m. macaco (Emm).

Emf is listed as critically endangered by the IUCN. Its remaining habitat is already substantially fragmented. A protected area, including the Sahamalaza peninsula and thus the probably largest remaining population of blue-eyed black lemurs, is currently in the process of creation. As part of a long-term research and conservation programme we counted the total number of individual Emf in two fragments of the Ankarafa forest in the south-western part of the peninsula to be 37 individuals on 0.61 km2. We extrapolate this count to the total forested area of the national park and compare the figures with earlier population estimates for the subspecies. We moreover provide preliminary data on a population of Eulemur macaco showing an unusual fur colouration different to that of both described subspecies. These animals occur around the village of Kapany, about 12 km north of Maromandia [5] and thus in the western part of the Emf and Emm border region. As they are homogeneous in colouration across groups and forest fragments it is unlikely that they represent subspecies hybrids.

Abstract

In the South African Karoo, at various seasons in 2006 and 2007, the four endemic small wild cat species caracal (Profelis caracal), serval (Leptailurus serval), African wildcat (Felis libyca)  and Blackfooted Cat (Felis nigripes) were studied and their behaviour and activity compared.
The emphasis of this paper is on the  ethogram of the Blackfooted Cat (Felis nigripes) and the  resulting prerequisites for keeping conditions appropriate to the species.

At the time there were 10 Blackfooted Cats, i.e. a considerable proportion of the world  population of 75 animals according to the International Studbook 2005, living in the two  cooperating research institutions, Karoo Cat Research and Cat Conservati on Trust. Seven of  these Blackfooted Cats, three adults and four kittens, I was able to observe for a long period. Species - specific behaviour patterns, such as trotting, eating, drinking, hunting, play and  comfort behaviour, as well as ecological adaptations, are described and the resulting essential  conditions for successful keeping presented. The problem of the need for an enclosure that is  very large in proportion to the body size of a Blackfooted Cat, with low atmospheric humidity  and sandy ground cover , is demonstrated.

This study paid particular attention to the social behaviour of the Blackfooted Cat and its  relationship of trust towards humans. This species rates as one of the shyest felids,  which is  why both keepers and visitors can mean great stress for them and even be the cause of stress - related illnesses.
Three times the experiment was made of rearing kittens aged from 6 to 16 weeks in  cooperation with their mother. Particular behaviour patterns, such as “trust” or “shyness”,  were evaluated. The results show very positive values in the first weeks, with a loss of trust of  limited duration in all three kittens in the 11th to 13th weeks. This experiment can be judged  as positive, since the adult animals proved noticeably more trusting towards their keepers and  less nervous than zoo - born ones. Without human contact they remained shy.

Blackfooted Cats rate as strictly solitary animals, which is why in observing their  intraspecific behaviour I endeavoured to establish to what extent this hypothesis is correct. The behaviour  of mothers and their young, as well as of siblings among themselves, was observed and  described. Social play formed a considerable part of the activities of kittens.

However, later too a particularly good relationship between siblin gs can persist (Zoo  Wuppertal) and even result in offspring (Karoo Cat Research).
Aggressive behaviour during feeding already occurs in very young kittens, as it does in  adults. The role of the father in the rearing of young is described and comparisons drawn with other  cat species. Altruistic behaviour patterns were observed in the case of two Blackfooted  fathers: fathers treat the kittens affectionately and may even relieve the mother of part of the  burden of rearing. This contradicts the view prevailing  in many zoological gardens.

In general, unrelated adult Blackfooted Cats can only be kept singly or in pairs. The sole  exception known to me are two females aged 5 and 2 which were kept together.

Comparisons of activity among the four observed species Blackfooted Cat (Felis nigripes),  African wildcat (Felis libyca), caracal (Profelis caracal) and serval (Leptailurus serval), as  well as between individuals, are presented in the form of tables and graphs.

The influence of climate on the four cat species was investigated in different seasons.

With all species it emerged that in the hot summer months daytime activity was greatly  reduced and nocturnal activity increased, whereas in winter the animals rested more at night.  Total activity was equally high in both seasons. In the case of all species, a comparison of  activity between wild - caught animals and those that have settled in showed a significantly  lower value in the wild - caught ones. Comparisons of activity in wild cat pairs showed  noticeably higher activity in the males. Comparison of grooming activity between male and  female wild cats showed a higher frequency in the females, in both  allogrooming and  autogrooming.

The problems involved in keeping Blackfooted Cats in zoos are comprehensively discussed.  The dramatic decrease in their numbers worldwide as a result of diseases such as  amyloidosis and infections is described, and the study investigates how far the causes are the result of  faulty keeping and stress. The prerequisite of a sufficiently large enclosure and suitable  furnishing for a manner of keeping appropriate to the species is pointed out.
The role of the keeper in the care of Blackfooted Cats is highly important. Trust - building  measures are a prerequisite for the successful breeding of this shy cat. Of particular importance too are possibilities for withdrawal and the distance from visitors in order to avoid  disturbance and stress.

Measures for environmental and behavioural enrichment are described in detail. By providing  toys, varied food hidden and offered at different times, as well as olfactory stimuli the activity  of Blackfooted Cats can be noticeably increased in the daytime as well. However, the best  recipe for heightening the wellbeing of cats is a successful and undisturbed rearing by the  mother.
