Abstract:

Within the Teleostei the Hippocampinae belong to the family of Syngnathidae, which are marine fish. The females deposit the eggs into a specialized brood pouch of the male. The juveniles are almost fully developed when they hatch. They look like small adults. As the juveniles of the seahorse species Hippocampus reidi are relatively small at their birth, the male releases a lot of babies at one hatch. The first two weeks after hatching, they live pelagic. H. reidi is a transient Physostome, which means that the swim bladder is connected with the fore gut by the Ductus pneumaticus at the birth. Since the Ductus pneumaticus becomes degenerate in the first days of life, the initial swim bladder inflation has to take place within this time. The first signs of the Ductus pneumaticus degeneration are visible at the age of 12 hours. Its epithelium gets thin and irregular in the middle part. In captive breeding there is also seen a significant influence on the development and survival chances of juveniles fed with different types of diet. This can also be seen in the formation of the swim bladder complex. At the juveniles age of 72 hours when they have been fed on Mischzooplankton, there is only a membrane in central parts of the Ductus pneumaticus left. At juveniles at the same age, which were fed on Artemia, the Ductus pneumaticus can still be seen clearly. Although the central part is significantly thinner than before, its total complexion is still present as a single- layered, flat epithelium. At the age of 96 hours Mischzooplankton fed animals show already completely degenerated spots in their Ductus pneumaticus, while Artemian fed animals of the same age have a still consistent Ductus pneumaticus. So this anatomical study proves a quicker development of the swim bladder complex in animals raised with Mischzooplankton.
