Summary:

The Giant Panda has the smallest body size of any mammal at birth relative to the size of the mother, except for marsupials. Despite this, the new-born are highly vocal in the first postnatal weeks. From the start, the calls were undifferentiated, highly variable and – in relation to the body size – unusually loud. Calls of the new-born male Giant Panda “Fu Long” were recorded at Tiergarten Schönbrunn, Vienna, for the first 10 weeks of his life. Using multidimensional methods the analysis of the calls confirmed the presence of a call repertoire with high range of variation. The following call types were distinguished: “moan”, “croak”, “squawk”, “squall”, “whistle” and “whiff”. They appear in different combinations mostly within call sequences. Four call types were evident in the first week: the croak (overall percentage 7.54 %), squawk (51.12 %), whistle (3.46 %) and whiff (7.13 %). In the second week of life, the squall (29.74 %) was introduced. The whistle disappeared after the third week and the croak after the fourth week. The moan (1.02 %) was first heard in the seventh week. The calls are largely chaotic and unstructured, and they generally indicate a state of high emotional arousal. The noisiness of the calls, which were mostly accompanied by nonlinear phenomena, and the high amount of variation suggest that they serve to continually catch the attention of the much larger mother. The high proportion of calls, which can be ascribed to an excited state of arousal, and the high rate of variability of the calls may indicate that they are essential for survival, even under rearing conditions in captivity. The call type “humming”, which is part of the call repertoire in all other ursid species, was not detected in the Giant Panda within the first ten postnatal weeks.
