Summary

Existing Literature concerning the osteology of the African Elephant (Loxodonta africana, bush elefant and Loxodonta cyclotis, forest elephant) skull is very rare. The aim of this study is to generate a comprehensive craniometrical dataset and describe the skull’s morphology. The final results are discussed with data from literature dealing with determination of species or subspecies, age and sex.
For this study, seven skulls of L. africana and two skulls of L. cyclotis belonging to the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna or the National Museum of Natural History in Vienna were examined. The measurements were taken with a caliper and illustrated in photos. The metrical data was documented in tables.
The skull of a 16 years old male Loxodonta africana has a size comparable to that of female adult skulls. Among the measurements, only the width of the foramen magnum, the occipital condyles, the size of the cavum nasi and the tusk alveole are greater in males. The least width of the neurocranium compared to the length of the skull is smaller in the adult male Loxodonta africana than in younger males and females. The viscerocranium of juvenile Loxodonta africana is relatively longer than in adults.
The skull of the bush and the forest elephant differ in a few traits. Forest elephants have a shorter and wider viscerocranium and the least width of the neurocranium is wider than in bush elephants.
In adults, the skull is longer and the ratio of the least width of the neurocranium compared to the skull length is smaller than in juveniles.
In this study, a method to distinguish between forest and bush elephant by means of considering measurements of the viscerocranium is described.
The age of an individual might be estimated using measurements of the viscerocranium also and of the least width of the neurocranium.
Some measurements described in this study could be useful for sex determination at earlier individual ages than mentioned in literature.
