Summary:

In this diploma thesis the pads of the frontlimbs were examined in two individuals using methods of macroscopic and microscopic anatomy. Brown bears possess one carpal pad, one metacarpal pad and five digital pads.

The pads of the brown bear are callous structures of the skin. The epidermis consists of a thick stratum corneum, a stratum lucidum, a stratum granulosum, a stratum spi-nosum and a stratum basale. The dermis can be divided into the stratum papillare and the stratum reticulare. The tela subcutanea forms a cushion consisting of strands of connective tissue and lobules of fat tissue. In dermis and connective tissue many blood vessels could be identified.

The hemispherical carpal pad is positioned two centimeters proximal the metacarpal pad. It has a rough surface with small, verruciform papillae. The cornified layers on its lateral side are thicker than medial. Its subcutaneous cushion lies palmar of the Mus-culi flexor and adductor digiti quinti.
In the carpal pad numerous melanozytes are found in the basal layer of the epidermis. The glands within the stratum reticulare could represent sweat glands as found in cats and dogs.

The metacarpal pad lies palmar of the phalanges mediae and of the proximal inter-phalangeal joint. It shows a massive layer of cornified cells. The subcutaneous cush-ion of the metacarpal pad lies palmar of the Musculus flexor digitorum profundus. The metacarpal pad shows numerous and thick strands of connective tissue.

The distal interphalangeal joints lie proximal to the proximal edge of the digital pads.

The structure of the pads resambles as in cats and dogs. But contrary to cats and dogs the carpal pad in brown bears is loaded during locomotion and in brown bears the first digit is long and in contact with the ground.
