Canids and ursids in mixed-species exhibits

Abstract:

The establishment of mixed-species exhibits in zoological gardens is now a fairly standard management tool, which is notably successful with several taxa, including primates, ungulates, birds and fish. Carnivorous mammals, however, have been included in such exhibits far less frequently, although with careful planning and management there is no reason why they should not be as successful. This paper explores the fundamental principles that should be considered when planning a mixed-species exhibit and looks at several examples, both successful and less so, which include carnivores with particular focus towards canids and ursids.
